Sore throat soother

I haven't been feeling well for the past week with cold like symptoms. I've never liked to take medicine anyway, but I am pregnant so even when I'm desperate for some sleep and relief from the congestion I have no options as far as medicines go.

My daughter, Liv, seemed to be having the same symptoms as me and when I took her to the doc he said it was simply allergies. My doc said the same about my symptoms. What?! I've never had allergies before, so this was news to me. Also news to me: allergies can cause an awful wheezing cough. I got the okay to use Claritin, but the most relief has come from my homemade concoction of hot water, honey, and lemon. I've used this remedy for a sore throat for years now, but I thought I'd share it with you in case you haven't heard of it yet. It is so tasty and has always helped relax and soothe.

Hot Honey/Lemon Drink
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp honey
1 cup of hot water

Pour the hot water over the lemon and honey. The hotter the better when soothing a sore throat.

You are free to alter those measurements to your own taste. I always end up using a little more lemon juice than that because I love that flavor. I've also heard of adding ginger root, but I have never tried it with ginger root so I don't feel qualified to recommend it. For those that have tried this drink, have you tried it with ginger root? Any other yummy or soothing homemade concoctions I should know about?
Next time you feel that tickle in the back of your throat, try this if you haven't already!

  1. Awww, I'm sorry you havn't felt well Teense. When I started reading this . . . cold symptoms, etc., I immediately thought "allergies". Unfortunately, Texas is pretty bad (at least our area). I developed allergies when I moved back to Texas too -- even though I'd never had them before. I use claritin also (and did while pregnant). My advise with allergies is . . . whenever you feel the very first tickle in your throat -- start taking claritin. The faster you get on it, the faster it will go away. Although, you may have to take it religiously for awhile, since it's spring. My doctor also gave me nasonex (nasil spray) . . . works REALLY well for sinuses. Your drink sounds soooo nice. I'll bet it feels so good on a sore throat! I can't wait to try it . . . well, maybe I can wait . . . I hope I don't have any sore throats anytime soon. :) Hope you get to feeling better. Love you.

  2. Thanks for the advice Kjirst! I didn't think the Claritin was doing anything, but I am getting better so that's good. I will definitely take it immediately next time. I just never realized that allergies were like a full on cold. I thought itchy watery eyes and some sneezing, but not this! Next time I will be prepared :)

  3. i love using that for an itchy throat, too. i also sometimes gurgle hot salt water, but i prefer the honey/lemon method because it tastes so much better.

i never had allergies either, but the past couple of years i seem to get a REALLY bad headache during the spring. it's hit me this year. i've had the worst headache of my life for about two weeks and excedrin, sudafed, and ibuprofin don't do a thing for it since it's not just a regular headache (it's the sinuses). sounds like i might need to try nasonex. luckily i haven't had a sore throat. i don't think i could handle both. good luck! hope you find some relief!

  4. Pregnancy mixed with allergies is just wrong!! It shouldn't be allowed! I occasionally got allergies but they would get way worse when I was pregnant!! BOO! thanks for sharing this soothing recipe! I need to do this tonight! I just lost my voice and seem to have sore throats like every other week. I hope you feel better soon!!
